Summary

This book explores the true story of renowned architect Philip Freelon. Philip is born into a Philadelphia family of middle-class professionals. His father is a businessman, while his mother is a teacher. However, it is his beloved Pop Pop who is an artist that influences Philip the most. Philip and Pop Pop see the world through the perspective of an artist. In school, Philip excels in art classes but has trouble with reading. Philip is encouraged by his Pop Pop to listen to his surroundings and that eventually helps Philip learns to read better. He then uses his special sight to create beautiful art based on Black culture. While in high school, Philip discovers that he wants to become an architect. As he studied architecture in college, he discovers African American architects and is both fascinated and proud. Philip eventually creates his own architectural firm. He was committed to creating positive, heritage-focused community buildings. During his career, Philip created several museums dedicated to Black history, as well as libraries and schools throughout the country. Then, he hears about a once-in-a-lifetime chance: to create a national memorial dedicated to the Black experience. Philip used his special sight to create a cultural masterpiece in Washington, DC, proving that dreams do come true.
