Summary

Trisha is excited about her fresh start in life. The young girl has just arrived in a new state, new neighborhood, and new school. The fresh start is such good news to Trisha that she walks to school on cloud 9. In the past, Trisha struggled with reading and was assigned to special classes as a result. Unfortunately, her excitement fades on her first day as she realizes that she’s been placed in a special class again. This time the special class has a negative nickname, the “junkyard” class. Her new teacher Mrs. Peterson immediately leaves a powerful impression on Trisha by insisting the students are geniuses. Through the school year, the eccentric students form a close-knit bond with each other, fueled by Mrs. Peterson’s love and acceptance. The students overcome bullying, fear and even death as the year goes on. Through various obstacles and moments of adversity, the students finally come to see that they are treasured junkyard wonders, just like Mrs. Peterson said. This book explores the themes of perseverance, resiliency, and acceptance.
