Summary

This story (told from the perspective of Faizah), explores her first day of school! It is also the first day her older sister Asiya is wearing a hijab. Faizah thinks that it is the most beautiful color of blue that she’s ever seen. The story exposes the cultural differences of Faizah’s family and the school she attends. The sisters learn that the custom they celebrate at home may be ridiculed in society because, throughout the day, the sisters experience unkind words and questions about Asiya’s hijab. The adversity they face only strengthens their bond. The wise words of their mother, “Don’t carry around the hurtful words that others say. Drop them. They are not yours to carry.” This story explores sisterhood, cultural understanding, and love.
